IW401 - An executive guide to SharePoint. Business-oriented best practices for the SharePoint platform - Brad Smith

You can't throw a rock in the IT industry today without hitting a SharePoint portal or site. The grassroots success of the technology has made it nearly as ubiquitous as Exchange Server. Entire market sectors have developed around addressing or exploiting the features or foibles of SharePoint, and in certain ways it could be considered one of the most disruptive software products developed in the last 15 years. Yet even with all of the action in and around the SharePoint market, the amount of confusion about its value and the examples of its spectacular failure for some customers are common.
In this session, I will be covering some of the primary business best practices a SharePoint customer or services provider can use to ensure that SharePoint is valuable for an organization and doesn't end up as another failure. I will introduce you to some of the Bad Habits that both SharePoint customers and services providers commonly assume or implement, and how they can be avoided so your project does not become a cautionary tale. I'll also be covering:
i. What is a good SharePoint resource and why are they so hard to find
ii. The "How vs. Why" perspective on technology
iii. SharePoint Core Values that you and your organization should adopt

IW402 - The discipline of Findability - Bill English

In this session, SharePoint MVP Bill English will discuss what Findability is and go over the latest research on Findability. He’ll outline the core problems with findability, including a lack of understanding of what Findability is, how Findability is confused with search technology platforms and how most corporations want to find their information quickly and easily, but yet they can’t seem to achieve this goal in spite of their best efforts and intentions. Bill will also outline the costs of a poor findability solution. If you’ve been working on ways to use SharePoint to make your information more findable, this session will help you understand the hidden problems which you must overcome in order to be successful in implementing a robust Findability solution.

IW403 - Records Management improvements in SharePoint 2010 - John Holliday

SharePoint 2010 introduces many new content management features that can be applied to build both document and records management solutions. In this session, we'll examine these features in detail and explore ways to apply them to solve traditional records management problems such as creating hierarchical file plans, using metadata to drive content routing and making e-Discovery more accessible for records managers and end users. During the session, we'll also explore the new in-place records management features that make it easier to manage compliance details for individual documents, and we'll take a closer look at the improved Records Center site to see how it combines all of the new content management features to simplify the creation of a locked-down records vault.

IW404 - How to organise effective requirements gathering workshops - Ruven Gotz

Analyst: What would you like SharePoint to do?
Customer: Well, what can it do?
Analyst: Tons! Let me show you…
All too often, this is how conversations between analysts and customers/stakeholders begin, and it isn’t helpful to anyone. SharePoint has a vast array of capabilities, but if you start by describing or demonstrating what SharePoint can do and how the technology works, you will end up with customers who are confused and don’t know where to begin, or who have massively overblown expectations.
In this session, you will learn how to set up and conduct workshops with various stakeholders that will allow you to understand their real needs. You will then learn how to document and organize this information so that it is useful to the stakeholders and that will allow you to guide them through prioritization and planning.
You will learn when NOT to do demonstrations of SharePoint, and when and how to do demos that are powerful and effective.

IW405 - Best Practices for achieving Enterprise content management for the masses. - Ben Robb

Technology is often the easiest part of running and delivering ECM systems within your company. Employee engagement, change management, governance, and communication are all key topics which often get forgotten when planning ECM projects, but they make the difference between the success and failure of your project.

IW406 - SharePoint and the cloud – the good / bad and ugly - Paul Turner

Microsoft has been offering online services in the cloud with BPOS, now Office 365, for several years since the introduction of SharePoint 2007. This session looks at the reasons why major companies are investigating the use of these cloud services especially based on the improved features available in the SharePoint 2010 offering. The session looks into the reasons for using or not using this service based on experiences with 3 major international companies who have 1. Used the offering as is, 2. Taken their intranet from the BPOS service to in-house and 3. Using BPOS as part of a hybrid (Mutli) cloud environment.

IW407 - End User Adoption - the most hijacked SharePoint Term, what does it actually mean - Steve Smith

IW411 - Achieving Return of Investment with SharePoint - Brad Smith

Even with all of the business SharePoint has generated for Microsoft and its partners (and competitors), there is still massive confusion in many markets about the value of the product to customers and how to define its benefit. Many people talk about ROI, and offer up calculations that are difficult or impossible to prove. In some cases people have stopped talking about ROI altogether, which is very dangerous for any organization that wants to be completive…or stay in business.
In this session, I will present a series of best practices that will help you and/or your customers calculate the true value of a SharePoint implementation. Additionally, we will go over:
i. Portals and their savings (I mean costs)
ii. Using Applications to increase revenue
iii. Using Process Improvement to increase savings.
Finally, I will share with you some examples of organizations that achieved a mathematically provable ROI with a currently operational system, that was made possible with SharePoint and these best practices.
